Why are sealants needed?

Dental sealants are a great way to protect your teeth from long term tooth decay or cavities. Surfaces on the back of our teeth trap bacteria and bits of food which are hard to keep clean. Toothbrush bristles can’t reach these surfaces which causes long-term decay leading to the dentists recommending dental sealants.

How do sealants work?

A dental sealant is a plastic material composed of resin. The sealant is applied to the chewing surface of the back teeth which flows into the pits in grooves in the teeth. The sealant protects enamel by sealing plague, food, and bacteria. Its purpose is to serve as a barrier preventing further damage. Sealants usually last several years before they need to be replaced.

Over time, sealants can become loose or worn out and chewing on ice or hard foods can also break them. Dentists will check your sealants during regular dental visits and reapply them if needed.
